To [make] a brighter World

To [make] a brighter World (July 20th, 2002)
Matthew 5:14~16
In the recent years, major corporations like Enron, WorldCom, Quest and many other major companies had fallen into scandals of fraud. Many of the owners were arrested and charged. Somehow, many of the faithful companies had fallen into depravity.
In a very recent survey, it is found out that CEOs of the American companies were 2nd place in the worst fraud and unfaithful in their company. All those companies that had lead the American Dream, all the cultures that had followed, in the selfish quest to gain more, the entire ethics of it being shaken to the very core.
But there is always a beam of light that breaks through and shines on. Professor Myung Woo Kang, who had lost his eyesight because of soccer accident, had worked and toiled hard despite his disability. Because of his effort, he had become the vice president of World Disability Organization and gave the courage and strength that they can also “do it!” Professor Kang states, “It is because I had met with someone who had lighted my way that I am here.” He recalls during his graduate school time, when during a rainstorm, while he was crossing a street without an umbrella, struggling, Minister Thornburg had given him a ride. Reading this recount of the story was inspiring. There are so many people who had to be thankful.
In a newspaper article on the 29th of July, 2002 there were 2 inspiring stories. One was of a Quecreek Mine collapse but the miners all survived because they all had tied each other to keep their body warm. They were trapped underground for 77 hours. Thankfully all of them escaped alive. To rescue them, the most advanced tools of the trade were used and 150 rescued worked into the night, fighting the minutes and seconds that passed. The other article was of Lance Armstrong. After fighting the testicular cancer, he was able to finally beat the Tour De France after 4 losses. He had raced 2,032 miles in 82 hours, 5 minutes and 12 seconds. He said that to achieve this feat of human limits, the result was from his teammates working together.
Jesus had told his disciples in the book of Matthew to be the “…salt and light…” of the way. If the modern world can overcome the selfish natures, and aim for communities, the lights of the world can spread even further into the darkened world.
How do we do that?
Instead of bearing down upon our neighbors, (Isaiah 3:15) we ought to help with their burden (Galatians 6:2) to light the way. It is far better to discover the other person’s strength instead of their weaknesses. To encourage, there needs to be more of those kinds of people.
Despite being in the busy cycle of ministries, there needs to be a time to pause, to see why the work is being done, and to see if this is what the Lord wants, and to see if the reality of how it is going. It is time to check if it is being the light of world, not my own focus, but of God’s and being obedient to it, and see if the work is in teamwork for a win-win situation.
Finally, see if the members of the associated churches are not for selfish gain, but of encouragement to each other, and to strengthen those who are weak, to grow in Christ.
